OHDSI Finland
FinOMOP is an initiative started in 2021 with the aim of and creating and maintaining mappings to enable the use of the OMOP CDM in Finland. Currently the community provides knowledge and support for Finnish OMOP users and data partners.
We host a semiannual Face-to-Face meeting for all national OMOP-stakeholders. There are also running regular work groups for Analytics-, CDM- and Vocabulary work.
Background
FinOMOP and the OMOP common data model (CDM) conversion projects started in 2019, funded by an EU IMI2 EHDEN data partnership and local funds. The first data partners to convert their data to OMOP were some of the Finnish university hospitals and FinnGen. In 2022, the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare (THL) joined and helps to coordinate the effort.
Primary health care is covered by legislation-mandated population registries governed by the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare (THL). THL holds several national registries. The mapping of these governmental registries has been initiated in 2022 (HILMO, avoHILMO, FinRegistry).
Secondary/tertiary health care is covered by five university hospitals. 3 out of 5 have completed OMOP-conversion, covering more than 70% of the Finnish population. Our aim is complete coverage by 2025.
FinnGen is a national public-private partnership genome project, and covers germline genomic data from 500,000 biobank participants. FinnGen has adopted the OMOP CDM.
Vocabulary mappings are coordinated through a shared Github repository, which version-controls an USAGI file for each national vocabulary and is periodically transformed into concept and concept-relationship OMOP vocabulary tables and added to the FinOMOP databases. ETL coding has been outsourced to EHDEN-certified SMEs.
Our vision is a comprehensive population-based health data infrastructure for Finland by 2025.
Objectives
OHDSI Finland (aka FinOMOP) aims at a high-quality, granular mapping of key medical data sources (electronic medical records (EMRs), governmental registries, genome sequencing projects) with comprehensive coverage (nationwide, primary, secondary, and specialist care) to the OMOP CDM, for a comprehensive, population-based health data network and ecosystem in Finland and reliable, transparent and real-time evidence generation by harmonized data applications.
Sub-objectives include:
- Hold regular FinOMOP meetings and task specific meetings for the analytics, vocabulary and extract-transform-load (ETL) workgroups
- Maintain a common mapping codebase through a shared Github repository and version controlled USAGI files for each national vocabulary
- Engage and contribute to the OHDSI, EHDEN, Nordic OMOP collaboration communities.
